Some people will follow anyone on twitter. I am not one of those people.
I hate slogging through all of the slush to find stuff that is interesting. Lets face it guys, there is a lot of spam in the twitterverse.
I do not follow spam or anything that appears to be spam and I think most people are like me.
So here is the short list of reasons for why you have no followers.
1. No Bio
Really guys? Put some words there. I’m on twitter to connect with people. How can I tell if you are a person if you don’t have something in your bio. This is your chance to show how cool you are. Think of it as your twitter resume. Make it informational but make it fun. Give new followers something to mention when they connect with you.
Here are a few of my favorites
2. No Profile Picture
If your twitter account has not hatched then you totally look like spam!
We all want to see your pretty face. Unless you are wonky looking. In which case put up a photo of something that accurately depicts your twitter persona.
Again this is a good way to show people what you are about.
I recently changed my profile pic to this.
One of my followers sent me a direct message saying I reminded him of Buddy Holly. To which I responded “Oo-ee-oo I look just like Buddy Holly :-).”
Look at that! A social exchange that began with a simple comment. Which brings me to number three.
3. No Interactions
Social Networks were meant for people to be social on. If I don’t see a few @ replies in your tweets I’m going to think you’re just a boring robot.
Talk to people. Get to know them. Let them get to know you.
4. Only Links
Links are great. Part of the awesomeness of twitter is how easy it makes sharing content. But if you are going to share a link please add a little spice to it. If the article is great but the title sucks change it.
5. Only Quotes
Look, C.S. Lewis was awesome. Muhammad Ali is also awesome and I love him. If these guys had twitter accounts I would follow them no question. But they don’t. As much I love the stuff they said, I want to hear what you have to say.
If you tweet only quotes it will make me think that you have no original thoughts and If you have no original thoughts then why should I follow you.
I’m not saying quotes are bad. If you are inspired to tweet someone else’s soundbite that is super. But make sure that is not all that you do.
We all want a taste of the unique flavor of human that is you.
6. Frequency
If you only tweet once a day I am most likely going to miss whatever it was you had to say anyway. No one is on twitter all the time and most of us are only on there for a few minutes each day.
Here’s a hint, spread your self out. Get a free Buffer or Hootsuite account and tweet stuff all day.
The results will be awesome. More people will see you and you will have more opportunities for interaction and you will make more friends.
Finally – There Are No Rules
These are more like guidelines that I break all the time.
But one thing is always true, I want to follow humans. Not some automaton who only tweets because some business person said they should.
So please be human.

Comments
Hey Rob,
Any post with a Weezer reference is okay with me ;)
I’m with ya on the Tweeters who only tweet Quotes. Yes, add an original thought to the brilliant quote or just one quote per day, please ;)
I love Hootsuite, but I love Buffer more.
And yes, please be human.
Well Thanks Craig,
You Have the first comment on my first post on my first blog.
I feel honored.
Hopefully I will have some Better Quality stuff up soon. And I hope my crazy input font didn’t make you go cross eyed.
Clearly I have some CSS bugs to work out. :-)
Thanks for the Support.
I loved this post so much. I smiled as I read and nodded. Amen. I know I should follow most of my followers, because if they think I’m interesting enough to be followed then I should follow them and see what they have to say. But I find it hard when (like you mentioned) they: don’t have a bio, their tweets are only quotes, or only retweets (had forgot about that). I think most people have a picture, but I really don’t care for the picture, as long as their bio pulls me in.
What you should add to your list is this: People who follow you, have like 100,000 followers and only follow around 5,000 people. That to me is really odd. So I ignore them. In a few days, because I didn’t follow them, they unfollow me. Clearly spam.
Great post, I’m glad I found it.
Keep writing…
:-)
